该经成立应该是在《佛说七佛经》成书之后。该经典是谈过去七佛的五部经典之一。模仿释尊传，列举过去七佛的第一佛毗婆尸佛（毗婆尸佛）的详细传记者。《佛说七佛经》的部分先成立，为了使其完成佛传，故加入本经，而成立类似于“大本经”的内容，但是只附加有关毗婆尸佛的部分，而成为本经。本经说法的场所并未提及。
