书叙四川成都双流县有书生湛国英，幼长文学，以《紫燕诗》为梅御史女杏姑所倾佩，遂相爱好。女兄富春嫉之，屡加簸弄，然终得结成眷属。此外又得六妾，而其中数人为女道士。后以军功累升大官，从杏姑之劝，告归林下。“醒名花”为杏姑别号，因以为书名。
