《劫余灰》十六回，最先发表在1907年—1908年《月月小说》第十号至二十四号。内容为写情兼海外华工的悲苦遭际，情词凄苦，故标“苦情小说”。小说采用章回体，以反美华工禁约运动为背景，描写了一对青年情侣的惨痛遭遇，是对罪恶社会的血泪控诉。虽然吴沃尧说是敷衍一个“情”字，但主旨却是表彰女主人公朱婉贞的“贞和孝”。
