《续红楼梦》的作者是秦子忱。根据书前的序文、题词可知，作者字子忱，号雪坞，陇西人，曾任山东兖州都司（正四品武官）。 据孙楷第《中国通俗小说书目·卷四》，此书有刊刻本、石印本和排印本三种。现存世的刊刻本有嘉庆四年（1799年）抱瓮轩初刊本，共三十回，今藏于浙江图书馆等地。此书内封题“嘉庆已未新刊，续红楼梦，抱瓮轩”。
