东林者，门户之别名也。门户者，又朋党之别号。夫小人欲空人国，必加之以朋党。于是，东林之名最着而受祸为独深；要亦何负于人国哉！东林争言真伪；其真者必不负国家，伪者反至负东林。此实何欤？盖起事至五、六十年，相传多失其实。于是而有伪者，亦势使然也。今之所为东林者，又一变往时欲锢之林下者、今且下及草野。夫盛世岂有党锢之事？何论朝野，亦办其真与伪而已矣。余于是条次其本末，以使观者有所考而感焉。
