原书一至四十回记叙盘古开天至清兵南下统一全国之大事。本书增补由清康熙时期，平西王吴三桂绞死明朱桂王一事写起，至民国时期军阀混战，各派代表签订和约，将上海改为商埠一事止，着重在民国之事。又，蔡东藩《中华全史演义》也是根据吕抚《纲鉴演义》增补，但改动较大，与本书不同，共48回。
